CL4.3 Large Ensemble Climate Model Simulations as Tools for Exploring Natural Variability, Change Signals, and Impacts

This session invites studies using large GCM, ESM, or RCM ensembles looking at the following topics: 1) Reinterpretation of the observed record in light of internal variability; 2) forced changes in internal variability; 3) development of new approaches to attribute and study observed events or trends; 4) impacts of natural climate variability; 5) assessment of extreme and compound event occurrence; 6) combining single model large ensembles with CMIP archives for robust decision making; 7) large ensembles as testbeds for method development.
We welcome research across all components of the Earth system. Examples include topics ranging from climate dynamics, hydrology and biogeochemistry to research on the role of internal variability in impact studies, focused for example on agriculture, air pollution or energy generation and consumption. We particularly invite studies that apply novel methods or cross-disciplinary approaches to leverage the potential of large ensembles.
AGU Fall Meeting 2021: Large Ensemble Climate Model Simulations as Tools for Exploring Natural Variability, Change Signals, and Impacts

This year’s format allows both virtual and in-person contributions and we will try to make this session for everyone with both in-person and remote convenors.
We invite submissions that exploit single model initial-condition large ensemble (SMILE) simulations of global or regional models to look at:
- Reinterpretation of the observed record in light of internal variability
- Forced changes and impacts of natural climate variability in the past and in future projections
- New approaches to attribute observed events or trends
- Assessment of extreme and compound event occurrence
- Combining SMILEs with CMIP ensembles for robust decision making
- Large ensembles as testbeds for method development including machine learning
We encourage contributions with interdisciplinary applications beyond large-scale climate dynamics (e.g. biogeochemical cycles, hydrology, agriculture, air pollution, or energy systems).
WCRP workshop on attribution of multi-annual to decadal changes in the climate system
Registration and abstract submission are now open for the Explaining and Predicting Earth System Change Lighthouse Activity Workshop on ‘Attribution of multi-annual to decadal changes in the climate system.’ The workshop will take place online, from 22-24 September 2021. The aim of this workshop is to document current research, identify challenges, and explore potential pathways towards building an operational capability to attribute multi-annual to decadal changes in the climate system on global-to-regional scales.
We are particularly interested in Large Ensemble research, as this is a key tool for attribution of climate change in the face of internal variability.

WCRP Workshop on Extremes in Climate Prediction Ensembles (ExCPEns) and associated Early Career Scientist Training and Discussion Forum
The WCRP Workshop on Extremes in Climate Prediction Ensembles (ExCPEns) and associated Early Career Scientist Training and Discussion Forum will be held online 25-27 and 27-28 October 2021 respectively.
The ExCPEns workshop will highlight the latest global research on applying subseasonal, seasonal, decadal and longer-term climate prediction ensembles to predict and assess the probabilities and nature of extreme weather and climate events.
The ECS training and networking session is targeted toward capacity development in the Asia-Pacific region, although applications from other regions will be considered.
Although the workshop is oriented primarily toward observationally initialized ensembles for subseasonal, seasonal and decadal prediction, it is aiming also to represent and explore commonalities with climate simulation and projection large ensembles as they relate to weather and climate extremes.

This edition of the EGU General Assembly will be held during 19-30 April 2021 as a virtual conference (vEGU21: Gather Online) and all sessions will be run in the new EGU virtual PICO (vPICO) session format. For more details on the new session format see the Provisional format of vEGU21.
Please note that you must be registered for the conference in order to obtain access to the live sessions. Without completed registration, you will not be able to attend any event at vEGU21. Early Bird Registration is open until 31 March 2021. The registration is open until the end of the conference.
